Just because a technology exists does not mean that your church should use it. Technology should never be used for technology's sake. It shouldn't be used simply because the megachurch down the street uses it or because it is the latest fad to sweep the nation.
Technology should only be used when it helps your church better achieve its purpose. If it improves something, use it. If it detracts, don't use it.
It seems simple, but hundreds of churches are sidetracked each weekend by thinking that they need to use certain types of technology in order to be relevant. Using technology does not make you relevant, but how you use it can.
The music industry is a classic example of this. Musicians write songs to be heard not seen, but there are occasions where a music video can be the perfect visual complement to a song's message. A music video can enhance a song's message, but it can also dilute the message and even the band's image. Unfortunately, many musicians create music videos because it is the cool thing to do and not because it enhances the song's message. The result is that there are a lot of lousy music videos about nothing.
However, do not be afraid to use technology. It can multiply your church's efficiency and effectiveness. Learn to identify technology that has potential to help your church. And train yourself to be able to accurately evaluate whether your church's use of technology is helping or hurting its ministry.
