The new media continue to evolve and as predicted, display attributes unheard of within old media paradigms. The chief example of this evolution is media convergence through the Internet, whereby the technology for video and audio streaming is producing content that's user-generated, instantaneous, interactive, and viral.
There are so many innovations in communication technologies that it can seem impossible to keep up. Nevertheless, as Christian leaders it's wise to pay attention to new delivery methods for transmitting the gospel. Several key new media technologies are worth keeping an eye on in the season ahead. Over the next few weeks I'll post on several usable communication services.
- Online high definition video sharing services
Both Viddler & Vimeo offer high definition, DVD-quality, video clip formats similar to YouTube but with noticeable modifications (ie - HD), changes or additions. Viddler is the open video sharing platform where people, businesses and churches can upload, tag, and share their videos. It's the only platform that offers tagging, video commenting and linking – to any moment in the video. Vimeo uses the "lip dub" as it's signature viral element - this is where you make believe you are singing to a song but you really aren't.
Additionally, blip.tv is a video sharing service designed for creators of user-generated content. blip.tv provides content creators with free hosting, support for a variety of video formats, distribution using technologies like RSS and an opt-in advertising program with a 50/50 revenue share. blip.tv presents "episodic content" or "shows," rather than viral video. This is where you can view Robert Scoble self-broadcasting.
In addition to its public services at blip.tv, the company also offers private label technology solutions for traditional media companies who want to integrate user-generated content into their existing platforms. In general, blip.tv is an open platform. It offers direct download links (in contrast to YouTube) for all videos it hosts, including videos that it has transcoded (i.e. Flash videos). (Wikipedia)
