Map of Social Networking Sites

Here's an interesting map that shows which social networking sites are dominant in which countries

Soc_network_map_3

3 observations:

  1. Brazilians and Indians love Orkut ; Hi5 is big in Central America, Asians prefer Friendster and Cyworld, and Europe's a mixed bag w/ Bebo dominating the UK
  2. Myspace and Facebook are the most popular in US and Canada, but not in too many countries outside of North America
  3. If you're doing ministry in a different country from your home church, they're probably not on the same social network as you.

3 speculations:

  1. There will never be one social graph to rule unite the world, let alone a single country (see speculation #2)
  2. A person's social network will continue to get scattered and fragmented across multiple websites.  US teens already have profiles on at least 3 different networks - Internet users in other countries will also have multiple social networking profiles.
  3. The landscape will change.  This map will look very different 5 years from now.
