YES, I've experienced this phenomenon - especially through twitter and using "twitter fox" - which pops up tweets every 5 minutes.

And it's happened several times that I've started into a good conversation with a friend based on their tweets.

Unfortunately, at this point, I follow WAY more people whom I've never met. Only 4 or 5 people I follow I actually interact with in person.

And I don't receive updates on my phone (perhaps I should?), so I can't just drop-in on someone at a concert or bar, I only get updated all day at work as I sit in front of the computer, and that's part of my job.

I do think we could use this to strengthen the ties between church members or something. I think I've seen it strengthen the Christian network around the nation. The recent blue tarps for Healing Place Church is a good example of that.
